2015 Marion Vineyard Grenache Shiraz
When Giovanni Patritti arrived in South Australia in 1925 he decided the Marion district was the perfect place to grow grapes and set up his family wine business. By the 1950s population growth and the demand for housing saw much of the land converted to residential allotments and dwellings. Today, only a few tiny vineyards remain; the most significant of these is the world's oldest commercial, urban vineyard, Marion Vineyard. Over 100 years old, the vineyard is a reminder of the history of the district and the quality of the produce it was famous for.
In 2006 the City of Marion decided that the last operational winery in the district, Patritti, should be given the responsibility of caring for the vineyard. We take our custodianship of this precious vineyard with great pride.
This wine shows the power and intensity that only old vines can bring. Aromas of raspberry, plum and cherry with menthol, tobacco and mint, that is so distinctive to this vineyard, layered over a touch of toasty oak. The palate is a juicy, round mouth full. The tannins are present enough for a beautiful structure but are soft, mellow and integrated into the abundance of fruit.
"This is a pretty damn good wine...Some days red wine drinkers just get lucky."
Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, September 2016
"With its current layer of bitter cooking chocolate, it's an adults-only Cherry Ripe you can drink."
